Shoulder replacement recovery time may be different for each person and vary according to individual condition and surgeon protocol.

Discomfort following shoulder replacement surgery is a natural part of the healing process. Don't be overly concerned if you experience shoulder replacement pain, as this means your body is adjusting to your new shoulder prosthesis.

Different types of medication are available to assist with shoulder pain relief during your shoulder replacement recovery. Your surgeon will work with you to choose the best option, which may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or local anesthetics.

Shoulder replacement rehabilitation

It is crucial to follow your surgical team’s recommendations to achieve the best recovery from shoulder replacement. Shoulder replacement rehabilitation programs can be started in the weeks after your shoulder replacement surgery, subject to your surgeon’s approval. A physical therapist will provide you with specialized rehabilitation exercises to strengthen your shoulder, restore shoulder movement, and improve flexibility, so that you may resume your daily activities.

Recovering from shoulder replacement surgery will be up to you! When you return home after surgery, take care to protect your shoulder. Your arm should remain in a sling for 2 to 6 weeks, depending on your surgeon's instructions and your rehabilitation progress.

To promote healing, continue taking your medications and exercising as recommended by your medical team. Most patients can resume simple routine activities within the first weeks after their shoulder replacement surgery.2
